A combination of hand-drawn elements and algorithmic elements, Understand is my most labor-intensive work to date. The work depicts a landscape outside of Marfa, Texas, based on sketches. These sketches were then converted by hand into polygons representing different areas of light and dark. A custom program was written to generate the long, sweeping lines, and calculate their intersection with different areas of light and dark. To execute the work, a small pen plotter was used. The darker areas were drawn with a thicker pen, while the lighter areas were drawn with a thinner pen. Mid tones and extra light tones were accomplished by using pens that were low on ink. The 49 individual plotter drawings were then cut by hand, and assembled into the full, tiled image.
